Two women, two countries. Nothing in common but a call to fight.
A heart-stopping new novel based on the extraordinary true stories of an American socialite and a British secret agent whose stunning acts of courage collide in the darkest hours of World War II.
1940. In a world newly burning with war, and in spite of her American family’s wishes, Virginia d’Albert-Lake decides to stay in occupied France with her French husband. She’s sure that if they keep their heads down, they’ll survive. But is surviving enough?
Nineteen-year-old Violette Szabo has seen the Nazis’ evil up close and is desperate to fight them. But when she meets the man who’ll change her life only for tragedy to strike, Violette’s adrift. Until she enters the radar of Britain’s secret war organization—the Special Operations Executive—and a new fire is lit in her as she decides just how much she’s willing to risk to enlist.
As Virginia and Violette navigate resistance, their clandestine deeds come to a staggering halt when they are brought together at Ravensbrück concentration camp.
The decisions they make will change their lives, and the world, forever.

Robuck (Hemingway's Girl) delivers an enticing tale of two women who risk it all to help the French Resistance. Former American teacher Virginia d'Albert-Lake lives in France with her French husband, Philippe. Together they endure the German occupation, and Virginia refuses to return to the U.S. despite pleas from her mother. French-speaking Englishwoman Violette Bushell marries French Legionnaire Étienne Szabo after a whirlwind courtship in London. After Étienne leaves to fight the Germans in Egypt, Violette joins the Special Operations Executive and Virginia and Philippe join the Resistance. Virginia and Violette meet when they are arrested and taken to Fresnes Prison near Paris, and their bond strengthens as they endure the hardships of imprisonment and, later, life at the Ravensbruck concentration camp, where Violette inspires heroic efforts in support of their fellow prisoners. Robuck lures the reader into the mud and the muck alongside the protagonists as they face the dangers and destruction wrought by the conflict. Fans of WWII dramas are in for a treat. Erika Robuck's latest novel returns to WWII to shine a light on two unsung heroes. Narrator Caroline Hewitt gives American-born socialite Virginia d'Albert-Lake an American accent and a voice full of confidence and determination as she defies her family and French husband, refusing to return to America while the Nazis occupy France. Young Violette Szabo, daughter of a British father and French mother and widow of an officer in the French Foreign Legion, also aims to fight the Nazis. Hewitt imbues her with an insistent Cockney accent tempered by summers spent in France. The women are brought together when Virginia becomes a member of the French Resistance and Violette joins a British spy organization. The author's notes provide context, separating fascinating fact from fiction. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine -

Virginia d'Albert-Lake's French husband wants her to return to the U.S. as German forces begin their assault and occupation of Paris in 1940. She will not leave her husband and her adopted country. Instead, she works for the cause in every way she can to get them through the war. Newly married Violette Szabo is quickly widowed when she volunteers to fight for the liberation of the French from occupying German forces. Robuck (Hemingway's Girl; Call Me Zelda) tells the story of how these two women eventually connect. It also denotes their representation of the bravery and sacrifices of all women in war, in their steadfast and non-conventional support of the resistance, or the actual employment of their skills and talents on the frontlines. Narrator Caroline Hewitt does an amazing job with the various dialects and accents and adds real emotion to this heartrending story. VERDICT A wonderfully emotional listen for readers of stories about romantic love, sisterly love, and love of country in the time of war.--Laura Brosie
